We began this special forum in an effort to hold space for BIPOC folx in Portland during Pride; and close the gap of miseducation and intolerance between our BIPOC and QTBIPOC communities. In our first year\, we emphasized QTBIPOC and BIPOC in-person attendance because there are few Pride events that are centered around Black and brown queer folx in Portland.  Given the positive feedback we received from the past two years\, and the heightened ignorance and attacks on the Black\, Trans\, and Drag communities throughout our country\, we are continuing this annual celebratory event. Michael Oher went on to become a Super Bowl-winning NFL football player famous for the film’s rags-to-riches story. \nRecent controversy over Oher’s real relationship with the Tuohy family alleges they never adopted him\, but instead made themselves conservators over his earnings\, and financially exploited Oher. \nWe will discuss how the film’s portrayal holds up today\, and how complicated issues of race\, privilege\, and white saviorism\, via adoption\, hit close to home through the Hart family tragedy of 2018.

The Buffalo Soldiers-a post-Civil War African American regiment in the United States Army-fought military conflicts abroad and civil rights struggles at home. The story of the Buffalo Soldiers involves historical complexities like race\, class\, power\, colonialism\, and western expansion. This film focuses on these Black men\, named and nameless\, who were part of this complicated history of the American West. Buffalo Soldiers: Fighting on Two Fronts was recently named Pacific Northwest Best Documentary at the Tacoma Film Festival\, winning the Audience Choice Award.
