SUMMARY:Petals and Thorns: Spoken Word as Activism
DESCRIPTION:La Toya A. Hampton\, MSW artistically known as The Poet Lady Rose brings her film Petals and Thorns: A Spoken Word Journey to the Race Talks community\, using it as the basis for discussion of how writing and spoken word has a role in both empowering and being the voice of unheard and underserved populations\, bringing awareness to societal ills\, the need for change\, and serving as a spark that challenges\, informs\, and enlightens\, while inspiring discussion\, action and activism. A panel discussion and artist talk back will take place following the film screening\, and attendees while in their breakout sessions\, will have the opportunity to create their own poem that highlights the parts of their identity that defines their purpose\, enhances their belonging to various communities and aids in their own brand of activism. \nThe short film Petals and Thorns: A Spoken Word Journey\, commissioned by Portland Playhouse as part of their Return to Wonderland 2022 short film festival\, follows the experience of a group of Black Portland teens–Nathaniel\, Aaliyah\, Alyssa and Olivia in an intensive writing and spoken word camp facilitated by La Toya A. Hampton\, MSW aka The Poet Lady Rose. Follow their journey as they go from novice writers to creating their own poetry that tells the story of living as a youth in the COVID-era\, which culminates in their triumphant first public performance. \n…this story highlights Black excellence and storytelling in a unique and captivating documentary. \n—Barr\, A. SUMMARY:Oregon's History of White Supremacy
DESCRIPTION:We are so excited to have our February forum to discuss the legacy of white supremacy and its impact on Black Americans in Oregon. \nEach panelist brings a unique element to our American Black History conversation. To be clear\, Black History is American history and it occurs 365 days a week. Most people are not aware of the origins of Black History Month\, nor who is Carter G. Woodson\, so please do a google search on both of these subjects prior to attending our forum. \nOur panel will begin with Dr. Carmen Thompson\, who is a scholar\, historian\, and author of the book\, The Making of American Whiteness: The Formation of Race in Seventeenth- Century Virginia;  she he was recently cited by the Oregon Supreme Court (follow this link and find her citation on page 642 in the footnotes.) Given the Black exclusionary laws and whites-only origins of Oregon\, this will be a sobering reminder for anyone who believes or is unaware of Oregon’s violent\, racist history. \n \nNext\, Intisar Abioto\, a celebrated Black artist and archivist\, will share her research about Beatrice Morrow Cannady\, the first Black woman to graduate from an Oregon Law School (Northwestern Law now called Lewis and Clark Law). Ms Cannady was also an NAACP President and founding editor of the Black owned paper\, The Advocate. Many of the issues she was covering in the early 1900s in Oregon remain at issue for Black people today. Bringing this story into present day\, Ms. Abioto will share how she and her family were unsuccessful in their attempt to purchase and preserve the Cannady house; which ties to the long history of eminent domain and white supremacy in the form of bank loans as the main contributor to the severing and loss of culture and generational wealth in the Black community. \nFinally\, Kolby Ross\, a Portland native who was a recent victim of targeted white supremacist violence will share his story and the challenges he has faced in getting our local District Attorney to file charges against a known affiliated white supremacist\, who still remains free. His story brings Oregon’s violent and racist history into the present day\, along with the acknowledgement that the recent ballot initiative to remove slavery from our state constitution was barely accomplished\, Black people in Oregon continue to struggle and fight against white supremacy. \n

For the past 11 years\, we challenged Portlanders to consider how to make the world a better place by getting to know your neighbors and becoming more aware of individual privilege\, all while exploring how race and racism play a role in our daily lives and interactions. \nAs we enter 2022\, social unrest still smolders as systems of white supremacy are slowly torn apart\, especially within the criminal justice and educational environments. On this virtual tour\, RACE TALKS will visit cities across the United States; and highlight practitioners in the fields of academia\, business\, government\, and law. \nWe will seek to understand how these cities are working to address matters of race and racism in their respective communities. In-person or virtual participation may vary based on COVID protocols. Sign-up is offered quarterly and tickets will include the purchase of that month’s featured book. Books + Conversations are partnering exclusively with Third Eye Books.  \nFor the past 11 years\, RACE TALKS has offered a monthly community program.
