SUMMARY:The 4th Annual History of Black Drag in Portland - A Juneteenth and Pride Celebration An Evening of Conversation & Performance
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 6:30p / Showtime: 7p\nAll ages welcome – children 12 and under are free\nBIPOC & QTBIPOC eligible for community supported ticket – includes admission and meal voucher\nemail info@racetalkspdx.com to RSVP for community supported ticket.\n\nRACE TALKS: Uniting to Break the Chains of Racism\, McMenamins History Department\, Poison Waters and local Black drag queens\, and sponsoring community partners are teaming up for a third year to present The History of Black Drag in Portland\, an intersectional Pride and Juneteenth event that explores the history and contemporary experience of Black drag in Portland\, Oregon. \nThis one-night event features an all-star panel of local drag queens followed by fabulous drag performances. We began this special forum in an effort to hold space for BIPOC folx in Portland during Pride; and close the gap of miseducation and intolerance between our BIPOC and QTBIPOC communities. In our first year\, we emphasized QTBIPOC and BIPOC in-person attendance because there are few Pride events that are centered around Black and brown queer folx in Portland.  Given the positive feedback we received from the past two years\, and the heightened ignorance and attacks on the Black\, Trans\, and Drag communities throughout our country\, we are continuing this annual celebratory event. Join us! \n\nEvent Consultants & Co-Hosts:\nLawanda Jackson\nIsaiah Esquire\nPanelists:\nKrystal Lynn Benoit\nBruce the Drag King\nCruz Daniels\nFlawless Shade\nAqua Flora\nPerformers:\nLawanda Jackson\nIsaiah Esquire\nKrystal Lynn Benoit\nCruz Daniels\nFlawless Shade\nAqua Flora\nMona Chrome\nMore information about Event Consultants & Co-Hosts\, Panelists\, and Performers here.

SUMMARY:THE BLIND SIDE
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors • 6:15pm intro 6:30pm movie – Q&A to follow\n$6 adults/$4 children 12 and under \n• Ticket includes personal size popcorn •\n2009 – PG-13 • Minor with guardian \nBased on the life of Michael Oher\, a Black teenager who\, in the movie\, was adopted by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy\, a wealthy white couple in Tennessee. Michael Oher went on to become a Super Bowl-winning NFL football player famous for the film’s rags-to-riches story. \nRecent controversy over Oher’s real relationship with the Tuohy family alleges they never adopted him\, but instead made themselves conservators over his earnings\, and financially exploited Oher. \nWe will discuss how the film’s portrayal holds up today\, and how complicated issues of race\, privilege\, and white saviorism\, via adoption\, hit close to home through the Hart family tragedy of 2018.

SUMMARY:We Are UnBecoming: Radically redesigning personal transformation work in service of collective liberation
DESCRIPTION:Personal transformation work is powerful\, healing\, creative work. \nAnd… \nConventional modalities of personal transformation work – life coaching\, wellness\, leadership – often perpetuate white dominant culture practices of hyper-individualism\, spiritual bypassing\, toxic positivity\, the myth of linear progress\, and extractive capitalist definitions of success. \nWe are here to dismantle\, not replicate this. \nIn this workshop we will: \n\nUncover the historical context of personal transformation work and how it is tethered to tropes of dominator culture (h/t bell hooks and Riane Eisler). \nIlluminate a framework that tends to the intersection of our personal transformation and collective liberation so that we divest from toxic practices in coaching\, wellness\, and leadership development.\nIntegrate somatic awareness\, healing\, and joy into our personal and collective transformation work.\nIncorporate creative practice into our work so that we cultivate personal transformation practices in true alignment with our audacious desire to thrive in collective.\n\nThis Radical Unlearning workshop is designed to be a more intimate gathering with tickets limited to 15 participants so grab yours now! \nLearn more and register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/we-are-unbecoming-a-radical-unlearning-workshop-tickets-607797638097

SUMMARY:Petals and Thorns: Spoken Word as Activism
DESCRIPTION:La Toya A. Hampton\, MSW artistically known as The Poet Lady Rose brings her film Petals and Thorns: A Spoken Word Journey to the Race Talks community\, using it as the basis for discussion of how writing and spoken word has a role in both empowering and being the voice of unheard and underserved populations\, bringing awareness to societal ills\, the need for change\, and serving as a spark that challenges\, informs\, and enlightens\, while inspiring discussion\, action and activism. A panel discussion and artist talk back will take place following the film screening\, and attendees while in their breakout sessions\, will have the opportunity to create their own poem that highlights the parts of their identity that defines their purpose\, enhances their belonging to various communities and aids in their own brand of activism. \nThe short film Petals and Thorns: A Spoken Word Journey\, commissioned by Portland Playhouse as part of their Return to Wonderland 2022 short film festival\, follows the experience of a group of Black Portland teens–Nathaniel\, Aaliyah\, Alyssa and Olivia in an intensive writing and spoken word camp facilitated by La Toya A. Hampton\, MSW aka The Poet Lady Rose. Follow their journey as they go from novice writers to creating their own poetry that tells the story of living as a youth in the COVID-era\, which culminates in their triumphant first public performance. \n…this story highlights Black excellence and storytelling in a unique and captivating documentary. \n—Barr\, A. (2022\, September 23) ‘Portland Playhouse Highlights Local Artists in Film Festival’ Willamette Week.

SUMMARY:Behind These Bars: An Activist is Born
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very special Min Yasui Day\, where we will officially dedicate the jail cell where Min spent nine months in solitary confinement fighting for justice for all Americans. We’ll hear about the man\, his work\, and his legacy as a civil rights activist and attorney. This will also be the debut of the film Behind These Bars\, about the jail cell where Min spent nine months in solitary confinement after defying curfew orders against Japanese Americans in 1942. While these bars could not confine Min’s spirit\, the arduous journey of the cell from the Multnomah County Jail to its permanent resting place at the Japanese American Museum of Oregon in Portland symbolizes Min’s life work and how this spirit of an extraordinary activist was strengthened rather than diminished by confinement. Min’s determination and faith in our Constitution will be illustrated by the reading of a few poems written behind these bars.

SUMMARY:Oregon's History of White Supremacy
DESCRIPTION:We are so excited to have our February forum to discuss the legacy of white supremacy and its impact on Black Americans in Oregon. \nEach panelist brings a unique element to our American Black History conversation. To be clear\, Black History is American history and it occurs 365 days a week. Most people are not aware of the origins of Black History Month\, nor who is Carter G. Woodson\, so please do a google search on both of these subjects prior to attending our forum. \nOur panel will begin with Dr. Carmen Thompson\, who is a scholar\, historian\, and author of the book\, The Making of American Whiteness: The Formation of Race in Seventeenth- Century Virginia;  she he was recently cited by the Oregon Supreme Court (follow this link and find her citation on page 642 in the footnotes.) Given the Black exclusionary laws and whites-only origins of Oregon\, this will be a sobering reminder for anyone who believes or is unaware of Oregon’s violent\, racist history. \n \nNext\, Intisar Abioto\, a celebrated Black artist and archivist\, will share her research about Beatrice Morrow Cannady\, the first Black woman to graduate from an Oregon Law School (Northwestern Law now called Lewis and Clark Law). Ms Cannady was also an NAACP President and founding editor of the Black owned paper\, The Advocate. Many of the issues she was covering in the early 1900s in Oregon remain at issue for Black people today. Bringing this story into present day\, Ms. Abioto will share how she and her family were unsuccessful in their attempt to purchase and preserve the Cannady house; which ties to the long history of eminent domain and white supremacy in the form of bank loans as the main contributor to the severing and loss of culture and generational wealth in the Black community. \nFinally\, Kolby Ross\, a Portland native who was a recent victim of targeted white supremacist violence will share his story and the challenges he has faced in getting our local District Attorney to file charges against a known affiliated white supremacist\, who still remains free. His story brings Oregon’s violent and racist history into the present day\, along with the acknowledgement that the recent ballot initiative to remove slavery from our state constitution was barely accomplished\, Black people in Oregon continue to struggle and fight against white supremacy. \n
