SUMMARY:The Day of the Gun
DESCRIPTION:Join us for RACE TALKS Movies + Conversations on August 8th to commemorate Black August\, an annual event that highlights political prisoners. The Day of the Gun documentary revisits the events leading up to the death of George Jackson in 1971\, an incarcerated leader of Black liberation in the 1960s-70s. Featured community host Amber Boydston of Spirited Justice will lead audience discussion after the film\, examining this issue through an abolitionist eye and exploring questions of whether Black freedom is attainable while prisons exist. \n6pm doors\, 6:45pm newcomer welcome\nSuggested donation\nAll ages welcome

SUMMARY:THE BLIND SIDE
DESCRIPTION:5:30pm doors • 6:15pm intro 6:30pm movie – Q&A to follow\n$6 adults/$4 children 12 and under \n• Ticket includes personal size popcorn •\n2009 – PG-13 • Minor with guardian \nBased on the life of Michael Oher\, a Black teenager who\, in the movie\, was adopted by Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy\, a wealthy white couple in Tennessee. Michael Oher went on to become a Super Bowl-winning NFL football player famous for the film’s rags-to-riches story. \nRecent controversy over Oher’s real relationship with the Tuohy family alleges they never adopted him\, but instead made themselves conservators over his earnings\, and financially exploited Oher. \nWe will discuss how the film’s portrayal holds up today\, and how complicated issues of race\, privilege\, and white saviorism\, via adoption\, hit close to home through the Hart family tragedy of 2018.
